Yemeni al-Qaeda leader ‘killed in US air strike’

The head of al-Qaeda in Yemen, Sheikh Abu Basir Nasser al-Wahayshi, was killed in a US air strike along with two other fighters in Yemen, an al-Qaeda spokesperson said in an online address.
In the video posted online, Khaled Omar Baterfi, said the group has assigned its former military chief, Qassim al-Raymi, as its new leader.
“He was very well known in Afghanistan and was very close to Osama Bin Laden, known as his secret keeper,” Baterfi said in the video.
Baterfi added that al-Wahayshi was formerly imprisoned and previously survived an assasination attempt.

Roy Hodgson: Arsenal's Jack Wilshere has the vision of Man Utd legend Paul Scholes

THE conversation inevitably turned to Jack Wilshere post match in the Stozice stadium and the name-dropping duly began.

Aaron Ramsey, Andrea Pirlo, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick were all mentioned, not always at the manager's instigation, but their relevance remained regardless.
Wilshere had spent the flight to Slovenia watching a documentary on Paul Gascoigne and while he boasts a talent which demands comparison, more importantly for England is that it is now fulfilled. Sunday has to be just a start - and another one at that.
The brace battered beyond Samir Handanovic were Wilshere's first goals for his country since he was playing for the Under-17s and reasserted England's control in a contest they should never have allowed to slip out of their grasp.
Yet in helping England to a sixth straight Euro 2016 qualifying win, and ensuring they finished the season undefeated for the first time in 24 years, it was Wilshere's desire to set the tempo, to keep his team-mates on the front foot and to accept responsibility which fired the imagination - providing he can stay fit.
England are searching for someone to stamp their authority on matches and step into the void created by the retirements of Gerrard and Lampard. Someone who can look to become what Pirlo has been to Italy or Kroos to Germany. Spain's Xavi and Iniesta will forever remain a level above.
"I would like to hope that you don't put that much pressure on him," said England coach Roy Hodgson following the 3-2 victory. "I would like it if your attitude towards him was the same as mine: he's been fantastic.
Jack Wilshere
GETTYJack Wilshere scored two wonder goals against Slovenia
"To come back three times from serious ankle injuries. To go on the field in the autumn, we didn't have him in the spring, then to come back to us again and to really take hold of games and control them with the quality of his passing, his movement and his dribbling ability.
"That is fantastic. I hope he continues in that vain. I don't want to push any more demands his way.
"If we can bottle up what Jack has been doing in these games against Ireland and Slovenia, that would do me nicely. Hopefully it will attract his manager's attention and hopefully Arsene [Wenger] will give him a few more games as well.
"We have had it in the past. In the England teams I enjoyed watching there were those type of players. We had Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and it is normal when players of that quality retire there can be a little gap or opportunity.
Jack Wilshere
GETTYJack Wilshere soaked up the plaudits after his double in Slovenia
"I hope that Jack, along with Carrick, who we have great faith and belief in, can step up."
Hodgson's referencing of Wenger was key because not only does Wilshere perform a deeper-lying role for England than at Arsenal, he is not certain of a starting position at club level. There is Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin and Ramsey even before Wenger peruses the summer transfer market. When Wilshere said last week he would stay at Arsenal for as long as he was "wanted", the emphasis was clear.
In fairness to Wenger, and Hodgson knows this all too well, he cannot pick Wilshere if he is not available. But the challenge runs deeper than simply making himself available: it is about fulfilling the prophecies laid down for him when he burst onto the scene at 16, and certainly England want the goals which illuminated events in Ljubljana to become the norm notwithstanding the role he is being handed.
Ramsey has scored 29 goals in 83 appearances for club and country in the past two seasons. Wilshere has nine in 78.
"Aaron plays in a much more advanced position," said Hodgson. "Where we have been using Jack is as a pivotal central midfield player and there is no reason why he cannot score more goals.
"With the quality of his shooting here it shows that. We will be encouraging it that's for sure because we don't want him playing behind players. We want him playing level with them.
"We don't want to hold him back in front of the back four, we want to push him forward and he will get into those areas 30 yards from goal and make those little chips and slide balls, and shooting from distance. He seems to enjoy it and I enjoyed his performance."
Hodgson passed on whether Wilshere is closer to Scholes than say a Gerrard. "The best person to ask is Gary Neville," he added. "I was abroad when Paul was in his heyday. Of course I remember him, I coached teams against him, but they are different players.
"Paul was a goalscorer from midfield and he was a long passer, the same way Gerrard was. Jack has a unique game. He has the ability to receive balls on the turn, to twist and turn past players in the same movement, his vision in that respect he could probably be compared to Paul.
"England have had these quality players and if we are going to be a good side we need them as well."

Dick Advocaat lines up £3.5m move for Liverpool man Sebastian Coates

DICK ADVOCAAT is set to splash the first chunk of his £40m summer warchest on Sebastian Coates.

Sebastian Coates

Sebastian Coates is set to be Dick Advocaat's first summer signing
The Sunderland manager will make the Liverpool defender the first signing of his new reign, with the Uruguay international set to seal a £3.5m switch after finally calling time on a wretched four years at Anfield.
Coates will put the finishing touches to the move early next month after he returns from Copa America duty.
After overcoming injury problems at the outset of his season-long loan, Coates impressed at the Stadium of Light.

The 24-year-old made 13 appearances in the second half of the campaign to help the Black Cats avoid relegation during Advocaat's initial nine-game reign.
Liverpool will allow Coates to leave to make room for Joe Gomez, Charlton's England Under-19 defender who is set to move to Anfield in a £6m deal.
Coates has made just six Premier League starts for the Merseyside club following his arrival from Nacional in 2011.
He hopes to resurrect his career under Advocaat, who has been promised major funds by billionaire Sunderland owner Ellis Short to avoid a repeat of the need for the great escapes from relegation in the last two seasons.

TRANSFER NEWS: Chelsea's Courtois QUIT, Liverpool offload flop, Man Utd midfielder LOAN

SAY YOUR OWN SPORT brings you the latest transfer news.

Thibaut Courtois could be ready to quit Chelsea and force a summer move to Real Madrid.
According to the Evening Standard, the Belgium stopper is concerned that if Real sign Manchester United's David De Gea next month he will never get the chance to play for the club himself.
Courtois enjoyed three years on loan from Chelsea at Real's rivals Atletico Madrid before returning to Stamford Bridge last season.
His representatives have reportedly begun inquiring as to Madrid's interest in the stopper, although he would likely carry an asking price of over £70million.
De Gea, meanwhile, could be sold on the cheap as Real seek to exploit his contract situation.
With the United goalkeeper entering his final year at Old Trafford, Bernabeu bosses believe they can pinch the Spain international for as little as £13m.
Liverpool are set to offload flop defender Sebastian Coates on Sunderland for half the price they paid for him.
The Uruguayan, 24, joined the Anfield club four years ago for £7m but failed to make an impact under manager Brendan Rodgers.
He was fielded on loan to the Black Cats last season and is now close to completing a £3.5m permanent switch.
The funds could be used to buy Charlton's young centre-half Joe Gomez, who has also attracted the attention of Manchester City and is valued at £4m.
Jesse Lingard
Manchester United's Jesse Lingard is wanted by Newcastle
Manchester United, meanwhile, could sell midfielder Jesse Lingard to Newcastle, according to the Telegraph.
New Magpies manager Steve McClaren brought the player to Derby County on loan last season, where he made 15 appearances.
And the former England head coach discussed how he will go about his transfer activity this summer.
He said: "You need a good recruitment policy, good players coming together and the timing has to be right, and I believe it is right now.
"I will get the board together, discuss the squad, what are the plans, what do we think."

President Buhari To Employ 5 Laws To Fight Corruption

Indications have emerged that President Muhammadu Buhari is likely employ five proposed laws to fight corruption in the country.
Vanguard reports with reference to the sources close to presidency that a committee led by Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s vice president, identified five bills already directed to Buhari for consideration. Those are the Office of the Financial Ombudsman Bill 2015, National Convicts and Criminal Records Bill 2015, Electronic Transactions Bill 2015, Whistle Blower Protection Bill 2015 and the Nigerian International Financial Centre Bill 2015 (considered in detail below).

The anti-corruption bills were reportedly among 46 bills swiftly passed by the immediate past Senate.
Presidential media aide Garba Shehu confirmed Buhari’s interest in the provided bills, but refused to give more information on the development.
Sources disclose details
“A Committee of legends in law led by Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) is putting finishing touches to a recommendation that will request President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to five of the 46 bills hurriedly passed by the 7th National Assembly at the point of its exit.”

The Whistle Blowers Protection Bill
Sponsored by former Senator Ganiyu
Meant “to provide for the manner in which individuals may, in the public interest, disclose information that relates to unlawful or other illegal conduct or corrupt practices of others; to provide for the protection against victimisation of persons who make these disclosures”.
Targeting: It is supposed to protect individuals who give out information on alleged malfeasances in government to security agencies.
Solomon first introduced the bill in 2007, but did not get the National Assembly support.

The Electronic Transaction Bill, 2011
Sponsored by a former member of the House of Representatives, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta
Meant to provide the legal framework for electronic transactions in the country; facilitate e-government services and promote transparency in the transaction of government businesses.
Targeting: Relevant for security agencies in the wake of increasing transition of the country from a cash-based economy towards a cashless economy facilitated by electronic channels.

The Nigerian International Financial Centre Bill
Meant to  produce three separate agencies (the Nigeria International Financial Centre Authority, Nigeria Internal Financial Centre Regulatory Authority and the Nigeria International Financial Centre Judicial Authority) that would properly position Nigeria at the centre of global finance and as such attract international finance into the local economy.

The Office of the Nigerian Financial Ombudsman, 2015
Meant to establish the Office of the Nigerian Financial Ombudsman, as an independent body that would resolve financial and related disputes in the financial services sector.

The Convicts and Criminal Records Bill, 2015
Meant to ensure a proper documentation of convicts and criminals for the purpose of keeping a record of criminals in the country.
It should be noted that one of the major focuses of Buhari’s election campaign was a pledge to tackle corruption in the country. He identified it as one of the fundamental challenges that Nigeria is facing.

SPORT:Nigeria will pose problems – Wambach

Abby Wambach
USA women’s national team captain, Abby Wambach, is wary of the threat the Super Falcons might pose when both sides meet in the early hours of Wednesday in their last group game at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.
The Americans top Group D with four points, while Nigeria are bottom of the log with one point. All four teams, including Sweden and Australia, still have the chance of progressing to the next round. But Wambach believes her team have what it takes to remain group leaders.
“They (Nigeria) are a physically capable team; they’re fast and strong. For us, we have to weather some of their speed, maybe for the first 45 minutes,” Wambach, the most capped player at the tournament, told FOX Sports.
“Frankly speaking, I think we have a deep bench, we have the ability to change our line-up if our coaching staff so chooses, and the game won’t be much different.
“We need to get a result; we have to be number one in our group, it has been our goal since we found out about our group. If we give ourselves the best opportunity to do that, it’ll instil so much confidence.
“We have to be very organised in our back because they have very fast forwards, technical forwards, that we’ve seen score great goals against very good teams.
“We have people that are prepared for everything against Nigeria, especially [because] we don’t know much about them.
“They are a young team. We have been scouting them since the start of the tournament. They’re going to pose problems for us. What we saw in the Sweden game, may not be clearly good goal-scoring opportunities, so from the attacking perspective, I want good goal-scoring opportunities against Nigeria.”
The 35-year-old forward called for patience in her team, believing that a perfect composure against the Super Falcons would bring in the goals.
She said, “There’re so many games to play at this World Cup, [so] we have to be patient; we can’t force goals to happen. We have to work for them; we have to play good soccer. We believe those chances will come, [so] we have to be patient throughout the game.
“I think for us, we know that our destiny is in our control. If we win, we go on as number one in our group. It’s absolutely in our control. We have to make sure we play good soccer.”

LUTH doctors begin warning strike, threaten total shutdown

The administrative building in Luth
The Association of Resident Doctors, Lagos University Teaching Hospital chapter, Idi-Araba, Lagos has begun a three-day warning strike over the non- reversal of the skipping policy for doctors working at the hospital.
The LUTH ARD Chairman, Dr. Moronkola Ramon, who declared the three-day warning strike during a protest on the hospital premises on Monday, warned that resident doctors might commence a full scale action if their demand was not met.
Ramon said the hospital management had stopped skipping, a policy whereby doctors were given double promotion, adding that the management granted same privilege to other health workers in the hospital.
He said, “We gave the management a seven-day ultimatum to implement skipping for doctors as it used to.

“We also served the 21-day notice needed for us to proceed on an indefinite action if they failed to implement the policy. If they do not after this strike, we will consider an indefinite strike. However, we will be providing emergency services to avert unnecessary loss of lives.”
Ramon wondered why LUTH had yet to comply with the agreement that the Federal Government had with its national body, the Nigerian Medical Association.
He stated that the strike was in compliance with the directive from the association‘s national body.

SPORT: Oshoala Seeks Ronaldo Inspiration to Beat USA

asisat oshoala
Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has urged her fellow strikers in the Nigeria's senior women national team to emulate Real Madrid's strike force of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in order to defeat the USA.
The Falcons need an outright victory against the USA to stand a chance of qualifying for the round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.
After holding Sweden to a thrilling 3-3 draw in their opening game at the World Cup, the Falcons lost 2-0 to Australia in their next game.

Oshoala who has scored a goal so far in the tournament, told FIFA.com that they will go far in Canada if they can effectively copy the trio.
“I want us to play like Real Madrid’s forwards. They’re very, very good, Benzema, Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
“We can be similar to them and I’d like us to play just like them as much as possible. As a front three, we can be very dangerous and if we try to be like them, we’ll go very far in this tournament!"
Reacting to the Falcons loss to Australia, Oshoala attributed it to luck.
“I would say Sweden actually made it very hard for us. Australia I think were an easier opponent. We were unlucky not to get the goals we needed. But it doesn’t matter, we have to be better, no matter what.”

It was learnt that the presiding judge, Justice Valentine Ashi, struck out the suit on May 26, 2015, following the notice of discontinuance of the suit filed by the plaintiff.
Kashamu, a Peoples Democratic Party chief in Ogun State, was said to have anchored his decision to withdraw the suit on “an ongoing settlement talks” between him and Obasanjo.
But the lawyers who are representing the former president in the suit said they were not aware of such talks.

Tragedy: Primary School Kids Drown In Jigawa

What can be regarded as an unfortunate incident occurred yesterday in Madaki Village, Gagarawa Local, Jigawa State when the dead bodies of two primary school kids were recovered in a pond.
According to the state commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr. Gidado Fari, his men participated in the rescue operation but the lives of the two young kids couldn’t be saved.
In a report published by Daily Trust, the commandant said his men were notified that two boys, Muhammad Yusuf and Habu Dawaki, went to the village pond to swim and had not been seen since then.
Following the report, Dr. Fari stated that his men and some villagers immediately rushed to the scene but could only recover the dead bodies of the primary six kids.
Speaking with newsmen, Dr. Fari also stated that the father one of the deceased boys, Malam Dahiru, disclosed to his men that the two children and their other friends numbering about eight were seen playing in the morning and that he did not know when they left the area.
This tragic incident comes just a month after something similar occurred in Bauchi when the dead bodies of three kids were recovered in a well.

23 killed, 101 wounded in suicide bombings on Chad police

Twenty-three people were killed on Monday in suicide bombings targeting police in the Chadian capital that the government said was the work of Boko Haram militants.
They were the first such attacks in the capital of the central African nation, which has been on the frontline of the regional fight against the Nigerian Islamist group.
“Boko Haram chose the wrong target. These lawless and faithless terrorists will be flushed out and neutralised wherever they are,” the government said in a statement.

Ten people were killed in twin suicide bombings in Potiskum, northeast Nigeria, a police source and a civilian vigilante assisting the military against Boko Haram told AFP on June 15. Eight vigilantes were killed in the first blast in the Igwanda area of the city, while two died in the second outside a tavern and brothel in the Dorawa area. AFP PHOTO

It said 23 people were killed and another 101 wounded in the simultaneous bombings outside the police headquarters and police academy in N’Djamena.
It said four “terrorists” were also killed, but did not give details. Earlier, a police official had told AFP that two suicide bombers carried out the attacks, which came as police cadets were attending a training course at the academy.
– ‘Crisis cell’ –
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The government said the situation was quickly brought under control, but the unprecedented assault on the capital prompted the creation of a “crisis cell” and vehicles with darkened windows were banned from N’Djamena.
Large numbers of members of Chad’s security forces were also seen taking up positions on the streets.
President Idriss Deby was expected to return home during the day from an African Union summit in Johannesburg, an official said.
In his absence, government ministers held a crisis meeting to discuss the bombings.
The former French colony is part of a four-nation coalition also including Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger that was created to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency after the group stepped up cross-border attacks.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has on several occasions threatened to attack Chad and other countries in the coalition.
Paris condemned Monday’s blasts, with a foreign ministry spokesman saying France “stands alongside Chad and its partners in the fight against terrorism”.
Chad is a close ally of France in its counter-terrorism Operation Barkhane in five countries in the Sahel region and the French army has set up its headquarters for the campaign in N’Djamena.
Last week, Abuja hosted a summit where Nigeria and fellow coalition members plus Benin rubber-stamped an 8,700-strong regional force to replace the current four-nation grouping.
The long-awaited Multi-National Joint Task Force, which had originally been due to become operational in November, has its headquarters in N’Djamena, under a senior Nigerian officer.
Boko Haram has been waging a six-year campaign of violence in northeastern Nigeria that has left at least 15,000 people dead and increasingly spilled across borders.
– ‘International problem’ –
Chad’s involvement in the fight against Boko Haram began in January when Deby sent troops to assist neighbouring Cameroon, whose far northern region was coming under attack from the rebels.
More than 70 Chadian soldiers have died in operations against the Islamists, including attacks around Lake Chad where the borders of Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger meet.
Nigeria’s new President Muhammadu Buhari, who has vowed to make crushing Boko Haram the priority of his rule, visited Chad as well as Niger earlier this month to build up the regional coalition against the Islamists.
“Boko Haram declared that they are in alliance with ISIS, so terrorism has gone international. They are in Mali, they are in Nigeria, they are in Syria, they are in Iraq, they are in Yemen,” he told AFP at the summit in South Africa on Monday.
“It’s an international problem now,” he said.
Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as “Western education is forbidden”, aims to create an Islamic caliphate in the territories it controls and earlier this month declared allegiance to the Islamic State group.
Some of the 1.5 million people made homeless by the violence have fled to Chad, a poor, largely desert landlocked country.
