Lord’s Chosen pastor shot dead in Lagos

LAGOS—Unknown gunmen, Monday, shot dead Lagos State Coordinator of The Lord’s Chosen Charis-matic Revival Ministries, Pastor Chukwuemeka Okpokpo, at Apple Junction, Amuwo Odofin area of the state.
The gunmen, said to have used a motorcycle, reportedly trailed the deceased from a Diamond Bank branch, where he had gone to withdraw N3 million for the church.
They reportedly fired shots into the air, which sent other road users and passers-by scampering for safety.
Reports said Pastor Okpokpo tried to escape when it became obvious that he was the target.
He reportedly slowed down on reaching a bad spot in the road, and the hoodlums shot at the tyres of the Chosen vehicle he was driving, bringing the vehicle to an abrupt halt.

One of the gunmen then alighted from their motorbike, walked to the vehicle and shot Pastor Okpokpo in the stomach.
He was said to have waited to ensure that Okpokpo was no longer breathing before he took the nylon bag containing the money, went back to his two colleagues in the motorbike and they zoomed off.
Fear-stricken residents were said to have rushed to the scene and raised alarm on discovering that the victim was wearing the Lord’s Chosen reflective jacket.
Some of them were said to have alerted members of the church, who rushed him to the church’s clinic at Ijesha.
When news of the tragedy filtered in, those who knew him wept uncontrollably, dispelling the report as rumour, while some said he was still in Ogun State, where he had gone to organise a crusade.
Resurrection prayers
A prayer session aimed at resurrecting him reportedly held between 12.30p.m. and 8p.m.
Some of the church members were, however, of the view that the gunmen could have been hired assassins and not robbers.
We’re investigating—POLICE
Meanwhile, Lagos State Police Command said it had begun investigation into the killing. The command said it was too early to say if it was a case of robbery or assassination.
A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard: “We are leaving all avenues open in our investigation.”
Church members thronged Okpokpo’s Iju home to commiserate with his family.
The family members hinted that Okpokpo’s body had been taken to his home town in Amizi, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Umuahia of Abia State.

FG, states, others owe construction firms over N600bn

Construction companies in Nigeria, under the aegis of the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI), have expressed concern over the high amount of debt the Federal, state and local governments owe the construction industry which they claim is over N600 billion.

According to the body, which is the umbrella group for building and civil engineering contractors, sub-contractors, and plant and equipment suppliers, the Federal Government alone owes its members over N600 billion.
President of FOCI, Mr. Solomon Ogunbusola, who made this known at the 59th Annual General Meeting  of the body, in Abuja said ex-President Goodluck Jonathan gave the construction industry so much work to do without money to execute them.

He said:
“We are not finding it funny; the bigger ones and smaller ones are finding it extremely difficult. In the construction industry, we are working below 30 percent capacity.
“If you are living in Abuja, for example, at the early hours of 4,5 and 6 a.m, you would see trucks of construction companies coming into Abuja because the workers will have to resume but now you don’t see the trucks including Julius Berger, Stabilini etc coming in.”
“Some of us have closed; we closed the company. We are only resuming in the office for the purpose of continuity and I want my message to be brought out clear as I am saying, we can’t hide it. It is unfortunate that the construction company can’t go and carry placards and start going around saying ‘we are in recession.’ If it is something we can do, we would have done it long ago.
“The Federal Government owes the construction industry over N600 biilion. I can mention three companies that the government alone owes over N200 billion: Julius Berger, N70bn; MCC, over N70bn; Setraco, over N80bn.  Those are the ones I am sure of the exact figures even S&M which is a growing company is being owed over N800m.
“We have never had it so bad like in the last two years because the payments were not coming forth and because we don’t know what to do, we have to just cry aloud.”
Ogunbusola, said FOCI’s 126 registered member companies are using less than 30 % of their staff strength due to mass retrenchment.

He further said that FOCI had contributed a great measure to the construction of modern Nigeria since its incorporation in 1954, hence doesn't think it's fair they aren't getting paid

He said:
“It is distressing to observe that many construction firms are just going to work for the sake of continuity as many of them are on the verge of collapse due to huge debts owned by the federal, states and local governments.
“We wish to bring to the notice of President Muhammadu Buhari; Senate President Senator Olusola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker, Yusuf Dogara that the construction companies generally are working at 30 per cent capacity following the mass retrenchment of our workers due to the delay/non-payment of certified jobs by various arms of government.”

Dana crash: 23 families seek amendment to compensation

Site of the Dana Air crash of June 3, 2012
Twenty-three families of the Dana Air plane crash victims have applied to the Federal High Court in Lagos to amend their compensation claims.
The Justice Mohammed Idris court fixed October 21 for hearing of the case, which was brought against Dana Air and the Estate of Pilot Peter Waxtan by the families.
The Dana Air’s McDonnell Douglas MD-83, operating as Flight 992, had crashed into a two-storey building at Iju, Ishaga, a Lagos suburb, killing all 153 people.
The incident, which happened on June 3, 2012, had generated controversies, among which was claims by some families of the victims that they had yet to be paid compensation.
A statement on Tuesday said 23 of the victims’ families wanted a review of their compensation claims due to time lapse and other developments.
It said, “The plaintiffs, among others, prayed for an order directing Dana to pay them the statutory advance payment of US $30,000 in full, or the outstanding due advance payment.
“They sought interest on the sum at the rate of 21 per cent per annum from July 4, 2012, the 30th day after the air crash and the date on which the payments ought to have been made, until the date of the court’s order.
“They also sought the costs of the applications assessed at US$10,000.00 each.”
The applications were said to have been filed on the families’ behalf by a consortium of lawyers, Aviation Attorney Group, led by Oba Nsugbe of Pump Court Chambers.
“Section 48 (3) of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act 2006 requires a carrier to make advance payments of at least $30,000 within 30 days from the date of an accident resulting in death or injury of passengers, to the natural person or such natural persons who are entitled to claim compensation,” the statement added.
Dana Air and its insurers are said to have failed to pay the statutory advance compensation of $30,000 to the families of several victims of the air crash.
In their defence, Dana Air and Stacey Veolette Sellers (who was sued as the personal representative of the Estate of Mr. Peter Waxtan – the late pilot of the air craft) denied liability and disagreed with the interpretations the plaintiffs placed on relevant provisions of the convention and the NCAA 2006 vis-à-vis their claims.

Cech says that he is grateful to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for allowing him to move to whatever club he chooses, even though that is now set to be London rivals Arsenal. The 33-year-old star has one year left on his contract with blues. Unfortunately after spending much of last season as second choice behind Thibaut Courtois he has been searching for a new employer.
Chelsea captain John Terry said: “There is obviously talk of Arsenal signing Petr and if they do get Pete, that will strengthen them for sure. He will save them 12 to 15 points a season.I am sure if he does leave the club, which nobody wants to see, but we understand he wants to play football, he is going to be sorely missed. He will improve whatever side he goes to.”
Cech has made more than 300 Chelsea appearances and has been at Stamford Bridge for 11 years.

The length of the basking shark is believed to be 6,3 meters long while its weight is three tonnes. The rare male fish had pectoral fins were over a metre in length and 60cm wide, its cuttle fin was about 1,2 metres.
The fishermen, who accidentally caught the beast, donated it to the Melbourne Museum for scientific research. Wildlife experts hope that the fish will unearth more details  about the rare species and their life under water. The last recording of this species being captured was in the 1930s.

The basking shark is the second largest living fish, after the whale shark, and one of three plankton-eating sharks besides the whale shark and megamouth shark. It is a cosmopolitan migratory species, found in all the world’s temperate oceans.

Despite their large size and threatening appearance, basking sharks are not aggressive and are harmless to humans. It has long been a commercially important fish, as a source of food, shark fin, animal feed, and shark liver oil. Overexploitation has reduced its populations to the point where some have disappeared and others need protection.
