37 Teachers Died In Kaduna Bomb Blast – NUT President

mail.google.com
The National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Micheal Olukoya, says that 37 teachers died in the bomb incident that rocked Sabongari in Kaduna state on July 7th.
The teachers were at the state secretariat to partake in the verification exercise initiated by the government to weed off ghost workers.
While speaking at the Founders day of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Abuja yesterday July 8th, Mr Olukoya said so far, 272 teachers had lost their lives to the various Boko Haram attacks in Borno State alone and that over 19,000 had been displaced in the North East.

Oshiomhole seeks stiffer penalties for rapists

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole
The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has called for stiffer penalties for persons convicted of rape, defilement and other forms of child abuse to serve as a deterrent to others.
He also urged the people of the state to stop giving alms to child beggars to discourage the rising trend of child beggars in the state.
Oshiomhole, who spoke when he received members of the state chapter of International Federation of Women Lawyers who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, decried the rising cases of the menace in the state and the country which he described as “heinous crimes” that must be prosecuted diligently.
He said, “We have discussed this, time and again at our Executive Council meetings. And at a point, we asked the Attorney-General to review the laws such that the number of years a convict gets will commensurate with the severe nature of rape and defilement.
“We are concerned; we have discussed this and we have a feeling that the number of reported cases are on the increase. We also know that, because of the nature of our environment, there will be several others that may not even be reported at all.
“When you look at the sheer number of rape cases that are recorded, it is clear that across the country both rape and defilement cases are increasing. Therefore, this calls for tougher measures on the part of those strengthening the law and providing for stiffer and harsher punishments than what is currently obtained and to also ensure that the few cases that are reported are properly prosecuted with a view to securing conviction.”
The governor, however, noted that the state had recorded a high level of success in the fight against kidnapping and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that kidnappers were completely put out of business in the state.
He also said that the state government was taking steps to discourage street begging.
“I have directed the Commissioner for Women Affair to take firm measures to bring this incidence to an end; Edo cannot be a haven for beggars. We recognise the economic challenges but begging is not and will not be the solution and exposing children to begging is unhealthy.
“I will even appeal to Edo people not to give alms to child beggars because it doesn’t help as women and their fathers push these children to the street. They use them in the manner they do, hoping they will attract pity. The more pity we show to those kids, the more they are subjected to these dehumanising practices,” Oshiomhole added.
Earlier, the Chairperson of FIDA, Mrs. Stella Ojemen, said the organisation would continue to speak and protect women and children who suffer humiliation due the the violence meted out to them by the perpetrators.
Ojemen said, “Our duties are simple – to ensure that women and children who are confronted with all kinds of issues are protected. We are disturbed by the incidence of child labour and trafficking of women in the state and with the plight of widows who are being disturbed by the families of the husband.

NFF hires foreign coach to assist Oliseh

The first time the Nigeria Football Federation contacted Sunday Oliseh for Eagles’ job, the former national team captain declined on one condition: He was to assist a yet to be employed foreign coach. This was shortly after NFF announced they were parting ways with Keshi when Sudan beat Eagles, one of the defeats that contributed to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the last Nations Cup.
Oliseh politely turned down the offer even before external forces imposed Keshi on the federation. Oliseh felt his pedigree would earn him the top job and not to assist anybody. He wanted to be in charge and take full responsibility. The Pinnick Amaju-led federation respected his position and left him out and succumbed to the pressure to re-engage Keshi.
And now that they have, again, parted ways with Keshi, the federation has, again engaged a foreign coach to coach the Super Eagles. But the foreign coach, a Dutch, will be under Oliseh who assumes the office of Chief Coach or Technical Adviser.
The deal has already been sealed and Oliseh and his assistant will be unveiled in Abuja next week. The contracts were signed in London Tuesday.

“You can even report that Jay Jay Okocha is the next Eagles coach,” Amaju Pinnick jokingly said when we contacted him for confirmation Tuesday night.
He would not discuss further details but only expressed excitement about the roles the Eagles coaches are expected to play in the development of football in Nigeria. He spoke to this reporter from London and these were his words.
“There will be workshops and coaching clinics for Nigerian coaches. The Eagles’ coaches will be touring Nigeria to watch league matches and not like in the recent past when our national coaches failed to monitor our leagues. We are initiating so many things that will help our football. We will develop the game and also aim to present a good team for the next World Cup. I can see a bright future”.
Keshi was accused of applying for another job while still with contract. The NFF terminated his contract on Saturday.
Oliseh is highly respected at home and abroad. His television soccer analysis earns him kudos. He is now expected to practice what he preaches on television. In principle, he is always firm. And this paints a picture of his character and should, perhaps, educate the federation on the need to make things plain to the new helmsman. This reporter recalls when he refused to cringe before a bullying sports ministry at the 2002 Nations Cup in Mali.
The players ended the group stage without bonuses. Oliseh, as captain, ensured there was peace and no agitation. “We believe that the ministry does not have our money yet. And we believe that they will pay the money when they receive it.
We are here for the matches and we hope to continue to win. We are focused on the tournament and not our bonuses for we know they will surely be paid later,” Oliseh told the then sports minister, Mark Aku, in response to the minister’s plea that they should be patient over their bonuses. Applause followed Oliseh’s maturity and response. But when money was eventually sent from Abuja, the ministry announced changes in flight ticket refunds.
This was midway into the tournament and the players felt that they had stomached enough. It angered them. They downed their boots for a day and went into the semi final match against Senegal with audible grumbles.
They lost and coaches Shaibu Amodu and Stephen Keshi were disengaged from the team. Adegboye Onigbinde was engaged to take the team to the World Cup. Oliseh, George Finidi and a few others were also dropped from the World Cup team. It was the height of injustice in Eagles and the results of the Korea-Japan World Cup possibly added weight to the law of karma.
Thirteen years on Oliseh is back at the national team as coach. This will delight former NFA chairman, Yusuf Ali who, before now, strongly campaigned for the engagement of Oliseh as Super Eagles coach even as Oliseh was yet to take up any known top coaching job.
“He is intelligent and it is on that basis that I want him as coach. If it means Oliseh assisting a foreign coach and eventually taking over they should consider that for he is a brilliant guy,” Ali repeatedly told this reporter who equally published his views on these pages.
“Yes, Oliseh has been signed,” one top NFF member confirmed last night. He also confirmed the Dutch assistant.
Samson Siasia hired Kalika, a Dutch, as his assistant from the Flying Eagles to his Olympic and Super Eagles days.
Clemens Westerhof is generally rated as the best foreign coach Nigeria ever had. He is Dutch also.

Nigeria midfielder, Mikel Obi, could be on his way to Turkish giants Fenerbahce following latest reports.
According to turkish-football.com, Ersin Düzen, who is the presenter of the Futbol Günlüğü show in Turkey, stated that Fenerbahce sporting director Giuliano Terraneo held talks with the Chelsea player while Terraneo was in London.
And current champions of the Turkish league, Galatasaray, have also been closely linked with the Super Eagles star who still has two years left on his Blues contract.
Mikel made a total of 26 appearances for Chelsea last season but fell behind Nemanja Matic in the pecking order as the Blues were crowned EPL champions.
The 28-year-old midfielder joined Chelsea in 2006, and has made 339 appearances for the London club, winning the league, FA Cup, Capital One, Champions League and Europa League.

Liverpool Transfer News: Striker concern, Man Utd target revelation, £11.5m bid made

Manchester City are unlikely to meet Liverpool's £50million valuation of contract rebel Raheem Sterling, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The Reds are bracing themselves for a third bid from Manuel Pellegrini's men after two rejected two offers already.

However, the contract saga surrounding the England international looks set to continue as City are understood to not be considering a third offer.
Meanwhile, Sterling continues to test Liverpool's patience after calling in sick to training.

The striker has been told that me must take part in their pre-season tour having previously told manager Brendan Rodgers he did not want to be involved.
Reds new-boy Danny Ings has revealed why he joined Liverpool over Manchester United.
The former Burnley striker as agreed a deal with the club after his contract at Turf Moor expired.
And while United had been linked with the England under-21 ace, Anfield was the only place Ings wanted to move to.
"As soon as I knew that Liverpool were interested, it was a no-brainer," he told liverpoolfc.com.
"It was the only club on my mind, to be fair. And now that it has happened, it's fantastic for me and my family."
And Atletico Madrid have launched a £11.5m bid to sign Reds defensive target Aymen Abdennour, according to reports.
The 25-year-old centre-back has been linked with a move away from the Stade Louis II.
And his agent Abdelkader Jilani  from Liverpool and Premier League rivals Arsenal.
But French media outlet Footmercato claims Spanish giants Atletico have launched a bid to sign the Tunisia international.
